Like the Phoenix

Years ago, I would follow a formula that today seems very black and white to me. Based on the position, I would be looking at specific years of experience and skill set and the interview would be very typical interview questions you can find on Google. Based on these components, how well person answered these questions, references and performance in working interview, I would either make offer or send declination email.
Today, some of these tools are still important but I use my intuition a lot more. I ask less of those typical interview questions and now I stick to a basic few based on my intuition. Tell me about a time that you’ve hit rock bottom and how did you overcome this situation? If you had time and money freedom what would you be doing with your life? Who would you be? How would you contribute?
The answers I have received never cease to amaze me. Yes of course, the accomplishments are great, but I find that what a person reveals about their hardships, how they overcome them and how they would contribute to society is far more telling about a person’s character and level of consciousness than how many blood pressures they’ve taken. What better accomplishment than that of losing it all due to illness and building yourself from nothing? This woman demonstrated that she is not only courageous but resilient. At the end of the day, in the workforce and in life, she will not sweat the small stuff. She will not quite when things get rough and she in turn will demonstrate more compassion and empathy for another person’s plight.
What is the lesson here? Well, there is the story of many of us women, how we have risen like the phoenix from near death and adversity to become stronger and then there is of throwing out the script from time to time and just trusting your inner guidance and knowing, it will never fail you and it just might open your eyes to new possibilities and maybe a few teachers.
In Wholeness,
Denise
